There are many situations that we can find on a day-to-day basis and that can pose some kind of risk to our sons and daughters. For this reason, this March, from Guiainfantil.com, we wanted to dedicate it to the home security, something that all members of the house can cooperate on, right?

On some occasions we will have to go to a health center to solve that small home accident, but in most cases a small action that we mothers and fathers can carry out at home is enough (below you will find information for each of the cases most common: fever, febrile seizure, burns, wounds ...)

But our role as parents and those responsible for the family home, It begins earlier, seeking a safe environment for our little ones to grow up, trying to minimize the risks they face, and it is that just as we educate them in values such as solidarity, respect or generosity, we have to educate them in their safety and those around them. Take note!

1 Have a first aid kit at home
Before going on to list the essential things that this emergency kit must contain, it must be remembered and pointed out that the first aid kit must be in a cool place. And we say this because many people keep it in the kitchen and / or in the bathroom and neither of these two rooms are the most indicated by the temperature changes that occur there. Another point to note is the exact place where it should be stored: in a place where children do not have easy access, not even with a chair that they can climb on.

And finally, what should said first aid kit? It doesn't have to contain big stuff, just the basics, so forget about "the just in case." With an antiseptic (chlorhexidine), soap, physiological saline, 96% alcohol, sterile gauze, tape, dressings, plasters, elastic and cotton bandages, tweezers, thermometer, blunt-tipped scissors and paracetamol and ibuprofen will be enough.

2 Keep cleaning and personal hygiene products out of the reach of children
Many (if not almost all) the poisonings that occur in homes where there are children are due to the ingestion of inedible products, that is, those cans that are used to clean the home and not to eat. Avoiding these types of situations is very easy: you just have to find a place that is out of the reach of children and, thus, there will be no temptations!

3 Pick up the toys to avoid falls
From a very young age, we have to teach children to keep their room in order and, after playing with dolls, blocks or cars, they put all the objects in their designated place, be it a closet or a box.

In this way, we will save ourselves more than one scare! For example, imagine that you are pregnant and that you trip over one of the child's accessories, or also that you have a child who is just one year old and who begins to take his first steps and falls because of a truck. They are situations that we ask you to visualize in your head, but that can be transformed into reality.

4 Eat slowly so you don't choke
When the child begins with the introduction of food, parents must be very attentive and, under no circumstances, never leave the child alone, since a choking situation can occur. When they are older and we see that they chew well, we must also be careful in what food we offer them and how.

For example, sausages always have to be cut in half to avoid any type of choking. And, a third important point, teach them to eat slowly and chew well, no binge!

5 Close windows when children are around
When it is summer, to air the house or at the time that a general cleaning of the house is being done ... These are moments in which many parents open the windows of their home wide. It's 'understandable', but as long as you do, don't leave the kids alone in that cabin! They may be curious to lean out the window, lose their balance, and go straight to the ground.

Another measure you can adopt is to change the closing of your windows and include the hinged method, the one that only opens from the top. It doesn't cool the environment that much, but it is safer, and that's what we care about, right?

6 Teach your children to take care of their siblings
You and only you are responsible for your children, that is, you cannot unload on your older children (if you have them) the responsibility of taking care of the little ones, but you can teach them to protect and take care of their siblings both at home , warning you if they are going to put their fingers in a socket, like at school or in the park, if someone messes with them.

7 Prevent children from entering the kitchen when cooking to reduce the risk of burns
The kitchen is one of the places in the house preferred by children. Perhaps it is because parents spend a lot of time there, but whatever the reason, the truth is that the kitchen is very dangerous for the little ones. You are preparing food at a high temperature and, in an oversight, the little one can drop a boiling pan on his body, causing all kinds of burns.

It may also be the case that he picks up a glass object, it breaks and gets cut, or that without you noticing he uses a knife or fork and sticks it in his face or in some other part of his body . Please, no children in the kitchen!

8 Keep in a visible place the emergency telephone numbers of your place of residence
Just as you have on your mobile the phone number of your neighbor, the school, the nursery, the health center ... why also include the emergency number in your city? Another good option is to create a document with all the important numbers (health center, nearest hospital, emergencies), print it and hang it, for example, with a magnet on the door of the refrigerator and keep another copy on your bedside table. Forewarned woman, worth two!

9 Learn the Heimlich maneuver and cardiopulmonary resuscitation
And finally, it would not hurt if all parents (I hope you never have to use it) knew how to do the Heimlich maneuver in a hypothetical case of choking in children and the cardiopulmonary resuscitation or cpr technique.

If despite all these precautions described above, we are unlucky that an accident occurs within the family home, the first (and most complicated) thing is to remain calm and, from this state of relative tranquility, act according to the PAS conduct: Protect-Alert-Help. What does it consist of?

The first thing is to protect ourselves, the place and the victim. We will evaluate if there is any potential risk for us (since if something happens to us we will not be able to continue helping), if the place where we are is safe and if the victim is well where he is or we need to move him (for example, that he is in the bath and it is better to take her out of the bath and lay her on a bed to keep her warm).

Once this is done, we will ask for help and alert the emergency services of our country if we consider it necessary, and we will give them all possible information: age of the injured person, circumstances in which the accident has occurred, state in which he is in At that time, if you take any medication ... They will probably ask you questions too, since it has to be fluid communication to give better care. They will tell us how we should proceed.

Have you taken good note of all our advice? They are super important, don't forget any of them, and if we are safe at home, we will be happy! Do you join the challenge?
