Mindfulness, a term that has been talked about a lot lately. But… what does it really mean? It's something new? How is it translated in Spanish?

Mindfulness, in Spanish translated by full attention or mindfulness, refers to deliberately focusing attention to what happens here and now, to the present moment, with a friendly attitude, observing and accepting how the experience unfolds at all times. The fact of paying attention to the present moment leads us to see reality in a clearer and more transparent way.

The term Mindfulness It is not new, although its introduction in the West and with the current meaning has more than 30 years. A) Yes, comes from Buddhist philosophy, and is the English translation of the original term 'sati'. Although there are writings that contain this term already in the fourteenth century, it is in the 70s when both the concept and its use are really 'westernized', purifying it of any dogmatic or religious weight.

Thus, in 1979, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a practitioner of meditation and yoga, decided to incorporate some of his practices into his interventions with patients with chronic pain. Then design the program Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on the University of Massachusetts then beginning the use of Mindfulness as an effective practice to improve health for clinical purposes. Since then, its use has spread to other contexts, such as companies, prisons, schools ...

We can say that Mindfulness is bringing meditation into everyday life. In fact, in English you can find the term 'mindfulness meditation'. Meditation is like 'gymnastics' that will facilitate practicing Mindfulness and living with mindfulness in the present. It would be something like being a footballer without doing the physical training part. Meditating involves deciding to spend time simply observing what happens… when I am doing nothing. Spend a conscious time observing my breathing, my emotions, my thoughts, without doing anything, without modifying them; simply observing. The more meditation is practiced, the easier it will be to bring that mindfulness into our daily lives. Thus, one can be meditating (or practicing Mindfulness) when walking, when washing dishes, when driving, when working or when reading a story to your children.

You can practice Mindfulness without practicing formal meditation, but the results when you meditate are vastly superior.

As we practice mindfulness, we begin to become aware of what is going on around us. Something so obvious, so simple, but that in the West we do not practice. And as we become aware of what is happening both inside and outside of us, we begin to leave that automatic pilot with which we all operate, to respond to situations. We stop reacting, and we respond consciously. We stop being slaves of our emotions and our thoughts, to be aware of them.

Many people say that meditation is difficult, and that they cannot do Mindfulness. However, others say: 'How could I not have known something so simple before?' The reality is that it is not complicated, because it is basically based on breathing. The most important thing is to have intention. When one begins to practice it, one is amazed at the simplicity of its practices. But it is precisely this simplicity that makes the mind go quiet.
